The major emphasis in the NHS IT situation today is on using computers to move towards
an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) as part of the process of modernisation.
One specific need in this policy is to enable a bridge to be made
between the new technologies and the existing paper-based medical
records.
To get value from a full electronic patient record management
system and to reduce clinical risk by having better information
requires not only a system, it requires deep-rooted practices to
change. This change is neither simple to define or make happen
but we have gathered much experience of it, including what not
to do. A typical NHS Trust will have 30 million pieces of paper
or more in its casenote library. Which ones to scan and why is an issue
on which we have in-depth experience.
The move towards electronic patient records, combined with the
implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, requires NHS
Trusts to examine their record-keeping structure carefully. To
assist in this process we provide the following consultancy services:
- Strategic document management reviews
- Health records options appraisals
- Health records scoping study to establish suitability of moving
to electronic records
- Strategic outline case preparation
- Output based specification production for document management
system procedures
- Independent resource for procurement
- Independent technical advice on all aspects of document management
and the use of scanning technology in the NHS.
The services that we supply involve carrying out a full review
of existing medical record functions. The work provides the Trust
with a complete analysis of the medical records' library function
and the processes used to handle medical records. The costs associated
with these operations are also produced so that they can be tested
against alternative solutions based on electronic document management.
