Pathology

Maximising the value of Pathology Computing

Pathology departments, and in particular clinical chemistry and haemotology, have long understood the value of computing and use of IT effectively - more recently microbiology, histology, cytology and infection control have automated their record-keeping processes by using IT.

Our consultants have specific experience in pathology computing working with both NHS Trusts and suppliers. Our supplier experience started many years ago working with the Ferranti Delphi-Phoenix system. We have kept closely involved with the pathology computing business and our experience includes an understanding of all of the modern suppliers.

We have both the technical and the pathology expertise, associated with reviewing and implementing multi-discipline and multi-site pathology systems both within a Trust and across Trusts.

We understand pathology and many of our staff hold professional pathology qualifications. Our team includes the Head of Pathology of one of the largest NHS Trusts, and we have people who have worked in both the NHS and for leading suppliers.

Pathology Evaluation Service

We can assist NHS Trusts in developing the case for using IT to integrate pathology services by performing a comprehensive Options Appraisal. This includes:

  • Assessment of configuration options
  • Identification of benefits
  • Evaluation of costs
  • Risk assessment
  • Change management need.

Change Management

Changes in working practice are inevitable when pathology is fully integrated into NPfIT. We can assist in the management of change by:

  • Facilitated communication and decision-making across departments and organisations
  • Project management
  • Documentation and training in new procedures.

The Benefits

The benefits of an integrated pathology system are significant in terms of cost savings and improved patient care. HealthSystems Consultants can offer time-tested services to ensure the realisation of these benefits. Many of them relate to integrating pathology information into the patient record electronically.
